Scope note
Long, cloth skirts, often ankle-length, decorated with brightly colored ribbons. Primarily worn by Native North American women as everyday wear and as ceremonial garments. Ribbons are usually sewn in parallel bands near the hem, either overlapping or with thin margins between each ribbon. Likely developed from ribbonwork created by Native women during the 18th-19th centuries with French trade silk.
